Failed Philosophy
Not quite evil - but plenty bad
Liz is Evil finally unleash their debut Failed Philosophy and it’s an eclectic and electric slab of wax that reminds us why we fell in love with them in the first place. Essentially a bit of a musical pick ‘n’ mix, the Dublin-based outfit flirt with cowpunk (‘Mount Molehill’) 50s-esque rock ‘n’ roll (‘Beached’) and Primus-like, jazz inspired noodle-ry (‘If’) while also giving everything their own unique stamp.
Liz is Evil are at their best when they hit you with all guns blazing though. ‘Maggie’s Laundry’ is a blustery beast of a tune and one of their finest moments to date, while ‘Homogonoise’ has a monstrous chorus that recalls the days when the Wildhearts were making a name for themselves. With hardly any fat on the record, Failed Philosophy is a fine opening shot. If this is what evil sounds like, then we don’t ever want to be good.
Key Track: ‘Maggie’s Laundry’
