Electric Picnic 2005: Saturday round-up
The first day of Electric Picnic went according to plan, with some top-quality musical entertainment - and great weather.
The Arcade Fire were undoubtedly the most talked about band, this being the first time the Canadians have played these shores.
On the main stage, the Flaming Lips gave their own rendition of both Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and Black Sabbath's 'War Pigs'.
Singer Wayne Coyne, who earlier graced the Hot Press chat room, crawled inside a giant plastic ball which was launched into the audience - it sounds made up, but the pic proves it.
Oh, and celeb spotters might be interested to know that in their now-famous on-stage animal troop was a certain Mr Wheeler of Ash (who was a lion), Mike Knightston from Limerick's Live 95, dressed as a gorilla), and Enda from The Chalets (the owl) and Dylan (the dolphin).
In an equally visual show, Fatboy Slim put on a 3Dtastic performance. Stood halfway up the stage against some giant screens, he DJed some of his own tracks, mixed with some other dance anthems like Audio Bullys' 'Bang Bang'.
He was later to be found DJing at the silent disco, another attraction of the weekend.
With Nick Cave, De La Soul and LCD Soundsystem among others playing the Sunday, the first day might be a toughie to beat.
For a full review of Saturday's happenings, don't miss the next issue of Hot Press, on sale Thursday.
