DeBarra's Folk Club announces Skylarkin - The Songs of Mic Christopher show
Tickets are on sale now.
DeBarra's Folk Club in Clonakilty has announced Skylarkin - The Songs of Mic Christopher, a special tribute concert set for November 29.
The show will honour Michael 'Mic' Christopher, who passed away while on tour in the Netherlands 25 years ago. DeBarra's was one of several places the Irish indie folk artist performed - and it was there he celebrated his last birthday with the late Glen Hansard.
The evening will feature performances from Christopher Luke, Ciarán Calnan, Dónal Tuipéar, Kealan Crowley, Dolcie Keogh, Valerie Deady and special guests, who will come together to perform a selection of Christopher's most-loved songs.
A donation from every ticket sold will be made to Cork Penny Dinners.
Christopher was a New York-born, Dublin-raised singer-songwriter who started busking on Dublin's Grafton Street around the age of fifteen. In 1990, he served as frontman and lyricist of The Mary Janes, releasing albums like Bored Of Their Laughing and Sham before they split in 1999.
After surviving a near-fatal motorbike accident in 2000, his music shifted toward a more hopeful tone, leading to the self-financed EP Heyday.
In late 2001, he was touring as an opening act with The Waterboys when he died, aged 32, after sustaining head injuries from a fall.
His friends and fellow musicians, including Hansard, Lisa Hannigan and Rónán Ó Snodaigh helped complete his unfinished debut solo album, which was released posthumously in 2002 and won Best Album at the 2003 Meteor Music Awards.
Several artists have honoured his memory in their work, including Damien Rice who dedicated his album O to him.
A documentary titled Heyday: The Mic Christopher Story was released in 2019, chronicling his life and legacy.
