David Holmes shares details of Sinéad O’Connor’s final unreleased album

Producer David Holmes has shared details of Sinéad O’Connor’s final unreleased album and revealed text messages he received from the late artist about the record.

He took to Instagram to post screenshots of the messages with O’Connor from when they were working on the album, No Veteran Dies Alone.

In the messages, O’Connor said “Neil” – possibly Neil Jordan, an Irish film director – was “having a shit freak about NVDA,” and that he was “playing it to everyone.”

“He’s a huge fan of us both. He’s a closet musician you see,” she continued. “Anyway I’m actually having a shit freak myself cus it sounds so good,” she went on to describe potential edits to the tracks.

“I’m proud of us!! … Let’s make records together until one of us croaks.”

Holmes also shared another message where O’Connor describes what she wanted for the album’s intro and sequencing.

In the post’s caption, he said he was still unsure if the final album would ever be released.

“No Veteran Dies Alone is a stone cold classic,” he said. “A love letter to her children and the world. Her songs are as real and pure as you can only imagine.”

Holmes shared the details on the third anniversary of her death at the age of 56. In the comments, other artists expressed their feelings about O'Connor and the album.

“I’ve heard it and it’s truly incredible I miss her so much,” wrote Imelda May. “I too re-read her texts sometimes and listen to her voice notes… seems crazy she’s gone and yet she feels so present. This album is important, it matters the world needs to hear it.”

“The combination of the two of you is just so perfect,” Lauren Laverne wrote. “Really hope this album is shared with people one day – we need her voice now more than ever.”

“I hope hope hope this album is released some day,” Annie Macmanus wrote.
