David Byrne releases single 'She Explains Things To Me' ahead of new album

David Byrne has released his new single 'She Explains Things To Me.'

The song is taken from his album Who is the Sky, set to release September 5 through Matador Records. Byrne revealed the new song is inspired by Rebecca Solnit's book Men Explain Things to me.

"Many times I have marvelled at how a friend (usually a female friend) seems to clock what is going on in a film between characters way before I do," said Byrne.

“Sometimes I understand poetry, but sometimes I need help. Though inspired by the Solnit book ‘men explain things to me’ there is a huge difference - mansplaining is usually unasked for, in this case I am the one asking.”

The musician will play Dublin's 3Arena on March 13, 2026, as part of his world tour.

Who Is The Sky will feature artists such as St Vincent, Hayley Williams and Tom Skinner , and is produced by Kid Harpoon and Ghost Train Orchestra.

Earlier this year, Byrne said that his first single from the upcoming record 'Everybody Laughs' was supposed to set the tone for the music to come.

"At my age, at least for me, there's a ‘don't give a shit about what people think’ attitude that kicks in. I can step outside my comfort zone with the knowledge that I kind of know who I am by now and sort of know what I'm doing. That said, every new set of songs, every song even, is a new adventure."

Who Is The Sky will follow his 2018 album American Utopia, which was later adapted into a Broadway musical and HBO film.
