Critics' Choice 1993
The top five albums of 1993 as chosen by the Hotpress critics.
1. Aimee Mann Whatever [imago]
Like Lone Justice, Til Tuesday were a critically lauded band who never managed to translate abundant talent and great songs into commercial success. Aimee Mann’s debut solo album didn’t do much to reverse her fortunes, but it was still a dazzlingly accomplished piece of work. Bittersweet mini-symphonies like ‘Could’ve Been Anyone’ and ‘Fifty Years After The Fair’ were crisply produced and expertly played, while the lovelorn ‘4th Of July’ was a contender for the most woebegone song she’d ever written.
2. Kate Bush – The Red Shoes [emi]
3. Bjork – Debut [mother]
4. Radiohead – Pablo Honey [parlophone]
5. American Music Club – Mercury [virgin]
