Constant Supply - The Coast Ain't Clear
Dark and dangerous debut from Donegal duo
It’s hard to believe that Constant Supply consists of just two members: James Gillen (guitar, vocals, keys) and Conal Sweeney (bass, keys) – oh, and a drum machine. Musical influences are discernible throughout – think Radiohead, Nirvana and even a grungy Brian Molko on vocals. Still, on the whole, the Donegal natives have a well-developed sound, laced with dark, moody undertones.
The album opens with the toe-tapping ‘On Their Feet’, a song with a wonderfully memorable chorus and the perfect vehicle for Gillen’s distinctive vocals. Elsewhere, ‘Requisite’ is an atmospheric slowburner; ‘You Spin When The Light Hits Your Corner’ has a bit of a ‘70s prog feel and ‘Capo’ adds some neat jangly guitar to the mix.
The tracks are relatively lengthy, with most clocking in at over five minutes. ‘Catch’, for example, would benefit from a trim for the sake of radio play.
That said, radio is probably not the immediate priority for these guys. They’ve made the album available for download on a name-your-price basis from their Bandcamp page. It’s well worth checking out.
Key Track: 'Daft Quotes'
