Chicago street to be named in honour of Steve Albini
Albini recorded Nirvana’s In Utero, Pixies’ Surfer Rosa, PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me, and many other critically acclaimed albums over the course of his career.
The late American musician and audio engineer Steve Albini is to be honoured by the city of Chicago, where the local authorities will dedicate a street to him.
Thanks to an ordinance passed by Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, the 2600-2700 block of West Belmont Avenue in Avondale, between North Rockwell Avenue and North California Avenue, will officially be declared “Steve Albini Way.”
The street is home to Albini's famous recording studio Electrical Audio, which Albini himself and staff members helped build by laying bricks during the construction process.
Though born in Pasadena, California, and raised in Missoula, Montana, Steve Albini was a seminal part of Chicago’s music scene since attending college at Northwestern University.
The musician called the windy city home from his college days up until his sudden death earlier this year.
Albini passed away of as a result of a heart attack on May 7 2024.
Known for both his work as an audio engineer as well as his candid and outspoken opinions, Albini was also an exceptional poker player winning two World Series of Poker gold bracelets.
Sharing the news on social media, Electrical Audio recording studio posted a picture of the official letter from the City Council of Chicago which said the the 2600-2700 block of West Belmont Avenue in Avondale would be renamed in Albini's honour.
The studio's post read "Thank You Steve Albini".
