The man who once turned down a Coldplay collaboration request, saying, "It's not a very good song, is it?" finished runner-up behind the London four-piece.
Coldplay also saw off competition from Adele, Jess Glynne and Calvin Harris to be given the big prize on the night.
While the decision left many Bowie fans incensed, other people defended the decision, saying that few artists had made the same impact on the music industry as Coldplay. Indeed, the band sold out their Dublin concert scheduled for this summer at Croke Park in a matter of minutes back in October.
Adele was also a big winner on the night, scooping two trophies for Song Of The Year and Album Of The Year.
