Barefoot And Shitfaced

Devon-based DJ collective Elevator Suite purvey a kitschy blend of loungcore pop that at times recalls the studied retro chic of Air – albeit with much more emphasis on the dance floor than the Gallic duo.

Utilising samples from a host of hip 1960's movie soundtracks including The Italian Job, The Thomas Crown Affair and In Like Flint, the effect is immediate, transporting the listener back to the days when all the ladies loved milk tray and happiness was a cigar called hamlet!

Of the more upbeat numbers, 'Man In A Towel' and 'Weekend Wonderboy' traverse acid jazz territory. ‘Barefoot’ sounds like it was actually recorded in a lounge, mingling the muffled sounds of clubbing crowds and bottles being cracked opened, under a bluesy electric piano which develops into a fully formed funk workout.

But it's when they chill out that they really shine. The breezy, 'Thinking of You' wafts like a warm summer breeze while the gorgeous 'Zoe's Song', a light psychedelic folk song is the highlight of the album.

Though Barefoot & Shitfaced might have arrived a tad late on the loungecore revival scene, Elevator Suite have more of a handle on the genre than most. So switch on the lava lamp, pour yourself a Martini and enjoy.
