Album Review: The Driver Era - Girlfriend
Brothers Ross and Rocky Lynch continue the fun on their sophomore outing.
After experiencing stunning success with their debut album X, The Driver Era have returned with their second offering, Girlfriend. The Los Angeles-based duo – made up of ex-Disney star Ross Lynch and his brother Rocky – have created a project that artfully reflects the last five years of their lives.
Released via BMG, the record acquires its sound from a variety of influences, including pop, alternative, R&B and rock. In particular, opener 'Heart Of Mine' is a perfect example of genre-blending. Beginning with a heavy synth beat, the track transitions into an upbeat pop-rock tune, before ending with a soulful guitar outro. 'Cray z babe e' and '#1 Fan' also incorporate a blend of soundscapes, with unique results.
Elsewhere, the diaristic 'Interlude' is a stripped-back piano number that feels raw and vulnerable. Unfortunately, the second half of the album is made up of previously released songs, though 2019 singles like 'A Kiss' and 'Forever Always' still sound impressive.
Overall, Girlfriend is a very enjoyable listen that equals the Lynch brothers' acclaimed debut.
