Hot Flavours: Our Tastes and Tipples of the Fortnight
Savour Kilkenny, rock 'n' roll choccies & San Fran street food are on this fortnight's menu. Eating his words: STUART CLARK.
It's road trip time as Hot Flavours heads to Savour Kilkenny, which ran from October 27-30 in the Marble City.
One of the festival's star turns is David Gillick, the 400 metre-running Olympian turned healthy food guru whose From The Track To The Table Cookbook is a must-have.
Along with matters of a culinary nature, the first Irish Celebrity MasterChef winner gave us the inside scoop on Usain Bolt when we met him recently.
"I first encountered Usain at the Juniors in Jamaica in 2002," David recalls. "It was my first international and this guy, who was two years younger than me, was already phenomenal. Obviously, over the course of his career, he got faster and faster and dominated his opponents. Usain's a freak; he's tall, lean, has the longest legs and just epitomises what an athlete should be. He has the personality to match, and has transcended his sport in terms of everybody knowing who he is."
The Greystones, County Wicklow native who helped sign The Killers to their first UK record deal with Lizard King, S’ona Ryan, has reivented herself as an artisan chocolatier whose Wake Me Up Before You Go Go Espresso Ganaches and Champagne Supernova Marc de Champagne Caramels - there's a theme developing here! - graced tables last week at the Q Awards in London.
That's not the only Oasis connection with S’ona dancing in one of their early videos. Her COCOFAN goodies are available from the likes of Avoca and The Butler's Pantry.
Having assessed quality, affordability and the number of food festivals, wineries and craft breweries per capita, WalletHub has declared San Francisco to be the US' Best Foodie City, with Portland, New York, Los Angeles and Miami making up the rest of the top 5.
If you're San Fran-bound, make sure to check out the Roli Roti Gourmet Rotisserie, a Ferry Plaza food truck whose Porchetta Sandwich is a thing of carnivorous beauty.
Having last month opened The Wickham Tap in Limerick - make sure to say 'howaya' to Emma, the best barkeep in the world when you go in! - the Galway Bay Brewery is making its Belfast bow with Northern Lights, an artisanal-minded establishment housed in the old Brewbot building on the Ormeau Road.
Jameson Caskmates 45% IPA Edition
Having previously made exemplary use of their stout casks, Jameson's Head of Whiskey Science - what a job! - has hit Cork's Franciscan Well Brewery up again for a lend of the ones used to hold their Irish Pale Ale.
It's another marriage made in libaton heaven with distinctive floral, citrus and hop notes complimenting Jameson's trademark smoothness.
Hot Flavours has been alternating between having it on the rocks and with a generous glug of Fever-Tree's excellent Madagascan Cola.
With only 2,000 bottles initially being released in Ireland, we'd recommend grabbing yourselves one pronto!
