Tributes pour in following the death of Annie Hall star Diane Keaton
Francis Ford Coppola, Leonardi DiCaprio, Jane Fonda and more have expressed their sadness at Keaton's passing.
Tributes have been paid to iconic Hollywood actress Diane Keaton, following her death at the age of 79.
Keaton's family announced her passing on October 11 and said she died surrounded by loved ones in Los Angeles, California.
Woody Allen penned a piece for The Free Press in remembrance of his long-time collaborator, former lover and close friend.
Allen called Keaton "unlike anyone the planet has experienced or is unlikely to ever see again," adding "her face and laugh illuminated any space she entered"
"When we first met, I thought she was so charming, so beautiful, so magical, that I questioned my sanity," Allen wrote.
"I thought: Was it possible to fall in love so quickly?"
In a post on Instagram, Bette Midler called her The First Wives Club co-star "brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary."
"I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me," said Midler of Keaton's death.
"She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!"
Francis Ford Coppola, who cast Keaton for her iconic role in The Godfather, wrote in an Instagram post, "Words can’t express the wonder and talent of Diane Keaton."
"Endlessly intelligent, so beautiful," Coppola said.
"Everything about Diane was creativity personified."

Leonardo DiCaprio, who played Keaton's nephew in Marvin's Room during the early years of his acting career, said in an Instagram story that she was "one of a kind. Brilliant, funny and unapologetically herself...she will be deeply missed."
Keaton's Book Club co-star Jane Fonda wrote on Instagram, "It’s hard to believe...or accept…that Diane has passed."
"She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view," Fonda said.
"Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man she was a fine actress!"
Fellow The First Wives Club actress Goldie Hawn paid tribute to Keaton in an Instagram post, writing, "Diane, we aren’t ready to lose you."
"You’ve left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination," Hawn said.
"How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to 'shut up' honey. There was, and will be, no one like you.
"We agreed to grow old together, and one day, maybe live together with all our girlfriends. Well, we never got to live together, but we did grow older together. Who knows… maybe in the next life.Shine your fairy dust up there, girlfriend. I’m going to miss the hell out of you."

Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who played Keaton's daughter in Father of the Bride, wrote on Instagram that working with her "will always be one of the highlights of my life."
"You are one of a kind, and it was thrilling to be in your orbit for a time," Williams-Paisely said.
"Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, your talent, and above all, your laughter."
Fellow Father of the Bride actor Steve Martin posted a picture of Keaton on X with the caption, "loved!"
Cynthia Nixon, who worked with Keaton on the 2014 film 5 Flights Up, wrote on Instagram, "When I was a kid, Diane Keaton was my absolute idol. I loved her acting. I loved her vibe. I loved her everything."
Keaton's Because I Said So co-star Mandy Moore described working with her as "an honor of a lifetime" on Instagram.
"They say don’t meet your heros but I got to work with one of mine and even call her 'mom' for a few months," Moore said.
"What an incandescent human Di is and was."
In a post on X, singer Nancy Sinatra shared how "profoundly sad" she felt at the news of Keaton's passing.
"She was a very special person and an incredibly gifted actor, who made each of her roles unforgettable," Sinatra said.
"Her light will continue to shine through the art she leaves behind. Godspeed, Diane. My heart goes out to her family and to each of us grieving this heartbreaking loss."

Actress Viola Davis expressed her shock at the news in a post on Instagram, writing, "No!! No!!! No!! God, not yet, NO!!!"
"You defined womanhood," Davis said.
"The pathos, humor, levity, your ever-present youthfulness and vulnerability — you tattooed your SOUL into every role, making it impossible to imagine anyone else inhabiting them. You were undeniably, unapologetically YOU!!! Loved you. Man… rest well. God bless your family, and I know angels are flying you home."
Actor Ben Stiller honoured Keaton in multiple posts on X, calling her, "One of the greatest film actors ever. An icon of style, humor and comedy. Brilliant."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which holds the annual Academy Awards (better known as the Oscars), wrote on X, "Some actors play emotions. Diane Keaton lived inside them."
"Diane Keaton embodied the contradictions of being human: funny and fragile, bright and bruised, always achingly honest," The Academy said.
"For decades, she filled every frame with warmth, wit, and wonder. A Best Actress Oscar winner and four-time nominee, her presence shaped generations of storytelling. Her spirit will live forever on screen, and in the hearts of all who saw themselves in her."

Keaton was the winner of one Academy Award, one BAFTA, two Golden Globes and dozens of other accolades.
Keaton started out stage acting in the 1960s, including a role in the original Broadway cast of the musical Hair.
Her illustrious film career spanned over five decades, with iconic roles in The Godfather, Annie Hall, Father of the Bride, Sleeper and Reds. Her more recent acting credits include Book Club, Heampstead, Poms and a voice acting role in Finding Dory.
Singer-songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, a longtime friend of Keaton, told People she had become "very thin" in recent weeks. Other friends told People Keaton's health "declined very suddenly" in the preceding months, though her family "chose to keep things very private."
She is survived by her two children, 29-year-old Dexter and 25-year-old Duke.
