Round-Up of Comic-Con 2018's Trailers
This year's San Diego Comic-Con felt a little different, given the lack of Avengers properties on display so soon after Infinity War. Instead, rival production companies like Warner Bros used the convention to build hype for many of their own blockbuster properties.
The strategy seemed to work. The trailers released have gotten people excited about upcoming films they wouldn't typically be. Hot Press have rounded up the best of the new teasers released online.
Aquaman/Shazam
Warner Bros dropped two trailers for films in their growing DC cinematic universe, both interestingly directed by filmmakers with a background in horror - James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring) and David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle Creation).
While Aquaman looks fine if too CGI heavy, Shazam is very promising. Adapted from a lesser known comic about a teenage boy granted the power to turn into an adult superhero (Thor's Zachary Levi) by a wizard, this looks zany and witty - tapping into the same brand of comedy that made the recent Jumanji a surprise monster hit.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Also, shown at Comic-Con was a new trailer for the sequel to the Harry Potter prequel, Fantastic Beasts. Written by author JK Rowling, this teaser - along with featuring more footage of Jude Law as young Dumbledore and Johnny Depp as series baddie Grindelwald - features many Easter Eggs for fans of the wizarding franchise.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
Just after a short clip of the film was released online, so was a full trailer. Featuring a gorgeous use of track 'Clair De Lune' and some beautiful shots washed in blue light, this definitely looks like it will be one to see in IMAX.
Glass
M. Night Shyamalan will be hoping to continue his return to form with this ambitious new film, joining two of his most successful movies - Unbreakable and Split. This trailer sees everyday man/hidden superhero David Dunn (Bruce Willis) coming up against The Beast (James McAvoy), a villain with multiple personalities. The latter seems to be getting support from the titular Mr Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), Dunn's old foe. This is setting itself up as a new, darker take on the superhero genre for those fed up of The Avengers.
The Walking Dead Season 9
There was also television teasers. This five minute trailer for new series of The Walking Dead, highlights that in a world full of zombies perhaps the humans left are more of a threat. The new season will be the last to feature Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes.
Doctor Who Season 11
Another long-running sci-fi series released a trailer for its upcoming batch of episodes. Just after dropping some new footage, this more full teaser for Doctor Who season 11 was released, giving a greater glimpse of Jodie Whitaker's first female doctor.
Star Trek: Discovery Season 2
The second trailer for Netflix's Star Trek: Recovery teases the introduction of a legendary character of the franchise. To reveal who would be highly illogical. Watch the trailer below instead.
Disenchantment Season 1
Meanwhile, for something more original, The Simpsons and Futurama creator Matt Groening's new series Disenchantment was released. It sees the writer move from the future to medieval times.
