Nicola Coughlan wears Gaza pin to Bridgerton London screening as “a call to Joe Biden”
The Bridgerton star said "If I can draw attention to that in a little bit of a way and give back a little bit and highlight what’s happening, I’m very happy to do that."
Galway actor Nicola Coughlan said she wore an Artists4Ceasefire pin to the London screening of part two of Bridgerton season three as a “call to Joe Biden.”
Coughlan spoke of the positive role Bill Clinton played in the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in Ireland and said the current US president “could really effectively use his position” to do something similar in Palestine.
Speaking to the PA news agency, she said: “It (the pin) is a symbol of peace. It’s a call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and Israel.
“It’s calling to release the hostages, to send aid into Gaza immediately.
“And it’s a call to Joe Biden because I'm from Ireland and the American president at that time, Clinton, had a huge effect on the peace process in Ireland and worked out a two-state solution in Northern Ireland.
“There’s been peace in Northern Ireland since the ‘90s, so I think he (Biden) could really effectively use his position now to do that,” the Irish actor continued.
“And we as actors, I think at the moment because I’m in the show and I have a lot of eyes on me, if I can draw attention to that in a little bit of a way and give back a little bit and highlight what’s happening, I’m very happy to do that.”
At the Bridgerton premiere in Ireland that took place on June 6, the actor also voiced her support for the people of Gaza and spoke on Biden's influence.
"I also think in terms of US politicians, [who] helped broker the peace process here,” She said. "I think a lot of Irish people look to Joe Biden and go ‘You’re very proud of your Irish roots, so it would be great if you could use that and apply it to the same situation and help people that are in need'”.
Coughlan has raised over €1.7 million for various Palestinian causes through a series of Instagram fundraisers.
The Irish actor plays the protagonist of season three, Penelope Featherington, and is known for her role as Clare in Derry Girls.
Bridgerton season three part two drops on Netflix today.
