Flora and Son & Poor Things make Oscars shortlist
The films announced today will now go forward Academy members, with final nominations to be announced on 23 January.
Two Irish films, Flora and Son as well as Poor Things, have made the shortlist for the upcoming Oscars.
‘Meet in the Middle’ and ‘High Life’ from John Carney’s Flora and Son are among the 15 on the list for best original song, while Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things, a production from Dublin’s Element Pictures, earned its place on lists for make-up and hairstyling, original score and visual effects.
Three songs from Greta Gerwig’s Barbie compete against the two Flora and Son tracks for five nomination spots at the Oscars.
Barbie was the overall winner in today’s preliminary announcement, with nods also earned in sound and original score.
The films announced today will now go forward to members of the Academy, with the final nominations to be announced on 23 January. The coveted ceremony is set to take place on 10 March.
Not all categories require a shortlist, as Cillian Murphy remains a favourite to pick up a nomination for best actor for his role in the Christopher Nolan epic Oppenheimer. Andrew Scott is also considered to have a decent chance for the same prize for his lead role in All Of Us Strangers, with his co-star Paul Mescal also potentially in the running for the best supporting actor category.
