Watch: First trailer for Joaquin Phoenix's 'Joker'
With the release of the first trailer for upcoming film Joker earlier today, DC fans were treated with a preview of Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the iconic Batman villain.
The film, which will not be considered a part of the DC extended universe, follows the story of the Joker’s descent from unsuccessful clown to mad murderer. Throughout the trailer, Nat King Cole’s uplifting tune ‘Smile’ is warped and exaggerated into an orchestral nightmare as Phoenix’s character inevitably (and violently) declines.
“I used to think that my life was a tragedy,” the Joker mumbles behind a series of unsettling clips. “But now I realize…it’s a comedy.”
After encouraging viewers to “put on a happy face,” the trailer culminates in Phoenix’s full transformation into the film’s titular character, makeup and all.
Joker will be released in cinemas on 4 October. Watch the trailer below.
