'The Sopranos' Prequel Casts Michael Gandolfini As Young Tony Soprano
‘The Sopranos’ creator David Chase has cast Michael Gandolfini as a young Tony Soprano in the movie prequel.
Michael Gandolfini, son to the late Sopranos star James Gandolfini, is set to take on his father’s role as a younger Tony Soprano in the movie-length prequel to the HBO crime series.
The movie, entitled The Many Saints of Newark, follows the story of young Tony Soprano during the 1967 race riots in Newark, New Jersey.
Gandolfini will star alongside Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga and Jon Bernthal.
In an interview with Deadline, the 19-year-old actor said, "It’s a profound honour to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano. I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark."
Filming of The Many Saints of Newark is expected to begin shortly with a tentative release date set for 2020.
