New plaque to commemorate movies and music videos filmed in Ringsend
On the south banks of the River Liffey, Ringsend has served as a backdrop to several features and films, from In the Name of the Father and Educating Rita to several music videos from the likes of U2 and The Cranberries.
A plaque honouring a pocket of Ringsend which has featured in several films and music videos will be unveiled this Friday, 26 April, at Mellon’s Shop on the South Lotts Road at 3pm.
Films shot in the D4 suburb include Jim Sheridan’s In the Name of the Father, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, and The General, which stars Brendan Gleeson. Other films shot in the surroundings include Educating Rita and Into the West.
The area also served as backdrop for music videos to U2’s ‘Gloria,’ which features St. Patrick’s Church on Thorncastle St, and The Cranberries’ ‘Dreams,’ with shots of Hope St with the unfinished Gasometre building in frame.
Ringsend also backgrounded music videos for Boyzone, The Shoos and many more.
“We’re getting an influx of new people in the area, and we want to bring the story of Ringsend to them,” says Eddie Bohan, Chairperson of the Ringsend and District Historical Society.
