Florence + the Machine have shared their latest cut from upcoming fifth album Dance Fever in the form of soaring, euphoric rock anthem 'Free'.

Florence Welsh’s latest single, following 'My Love', 'King' and 'Heaven is Here' is about battling anxiety and the fleeting moments when that anxiety disappears through the magic of music and communal catharsis. It’s not hard to imagine 'Free' achieving anthem status in the future.

The cinematic visual was directed by the group’s frequent collaborator Autumn de Wilde, who shot the album and single artworks. Bill Nighy takes on the role of Florence's anxiety in the humorous visuals, with gorgeous landscape shots interspersed as she struggles with her mental health. Ryan Heffington also choreographed the clip.

In its majestic sense of release, 'Free' is reminiscent of Florence classics like 'Dog Days Are Over' and 'Shake It Out.' Florence co-wrote and co-produced the song with Jack Antonoff, debuting it at her Newcastle tour opener a few nights ago.

Florence Welch started writing the album’s songs in pandemic isolation, and recorded them in New York with co-producer Jack Antonoff. Glass Animals frontman Dave Bayley also helped out on much of the LP. The songs evoke what Welch “missed most during lockdown — clubs, dancing at festivals, being in the whirl of movement, and togetherness,” according to a release. On Instagram, the singer described the album as “a fairytale in 14 songs.”

Florence + the Machine’s most recent LP, High as Hope, was released in 2018. Last year, the group contributed 'Call Me Cruella' to the soundtrack for Disney’s Cruella. In the years prior, the band released a handful of standalone songs, such as 'Light of Love,' 'Moderation,' and 'Haunted House.'
