FIFA consider sanction over 1916 logo on ROI shirts
FIFA will consider whether to sanction the FAI for the 1916 anniversary celebration symbol worn on Republic of Ireland jerseys in the friendly match last March against Switzerland.
The use of the poppy has been a huge source of controversy and even more so this week after FIFA refused to allow England and Scotland to wear the symbol in their World Cup qualifier on Saturday week – which is also Armistice Day.
FIFA are taking the stance as they do not allow political symbols to be worn on team shirts.
But the British MP Damian Collins yesterday cited Ireland’s jerseys in the match with the Swiss as example of supposed double standards by the governing body.
A FIFA spokesperson said “The disciplinary committee of FIFA is evaluating the matter” of Ireland’s jerseys worn against the Swiss.
The spokesperson said that there is no specific date for a decision.
