Billie Eilish speaks out against ICE, Trump Administration
“It is very clear that protecting our planet and our communities are not a priority for this administration,” Eilish said at the MLK Jr. Beloved Community Awards.
Billie Eilish has spoken out against the Trump Administration and ICE in an acceptance speech.
The nine-time Grammy winner, who received the Environmental Justice Award at the MLK Jr. Beloved Community Awards on Saturday, expressed her disapproval for the current conditions in the United States.
“It's very strange to be celebrated for working towards environmental justice at a time where it feels less achievable than ever, given the state of our country and the world right now,” Eilish reflected. “We're seeing our neighbors being kidnapped, peaceful protesters being assaulted and murdered.”
Her speech comes in the wake of the murder of Renée Nicole Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross on January 7 and the subsequent ICE occupation of Minneapolis.
“Our civil rights are being stripped, resources to fight the climate crisis being cut, fossil fuels and animal agriculture destroying our planet and people's health, access to food and healthcare becoming a privilege for the wealthy, instead of a basic human right for all Americans,” Eilish continued. “It is very clear that protecting our planet and our communities are not a priority for this administration, and it's really hard to celebrate when we no longer feel safe in our own homes or in our streets.”
Throughout the speech, Eilish asserted the sense of responsibility she feels towards the public, stating, “I feel like I'm just doing what anyone in my position should be doing.”
Last year, the singer voiced a call for billionaires to give up their wealth at the WSJ Innovator Awards. “If you're a billionaire, why are you a billionaire?” Eilish said with billionaire and CEO of Meta Mark Zuckerburg in the audience. “No hate, but give your money away, shorties.”
