Applications now open for Basic Income for the Arts scheme
Artists eligible must have a professional creative practice, and be based in the Republic of Ireland at the time of application. Recently graduated applicants are also eligible.
The Minister for Culture, Patrick O’Donovan TD, has announced that applications for the permanent Basic Income for the Arts (BIA) scheme open today, April 15.
Professional artists nationwide are invited to apply for the scheme, which will close on May 12. 2,000 eligible artists will be selected for the scheme. All eligible artists are strongly encouraged to apply early.
“I am pleased to be the Minister responsible for making the BIA permanent, and I encourage all professional artists to apply for the scheme,” said O’Donovan. “This scheme is important for society in general, not just for artists. It has the potential to expand the arts sector and create more opportunities for citizens to engage in the arts. It also recognises the contribution of artists to democracy and to how we see ourselves as a nation.”
“With applications open for Basic Income for Artists, the NCFA encourages all those eligible to apply,” said Maria Fleming, chair of The National Campaign for the Arts (NCFA). "We know from the pilot scheme the opportunity this presents to arts workers to support their artistic practice and advance within their profession.”
Artists eligible must have a professional creative practice, based in the Republic of Ireland at the time of application. Recently graduated applicants are also eligible.
Payments to selected artists are expected to begin before the end of 2026, following the assessment of applications over the summer.
