Asa Breed

Asa Breed is a bold, ambitious statement from a techno producer keen to expand his range.

Richard Brophy, 11 Jun 2007

Asa Breed is far removed from the US producer’s dancefloor slaying incarnation, Audion. It shows that he wants to make the leap to pop music and in the main, he succeeds. Dear’s vocals on the infectious yet atmospheric single ‘Deserter’, has echoes of Ian Curtis, new wave influences, like the angular Talking Heads art school rock of ‘Pom Pom’ and the Japan-inspired staccato rhythms of ‘Shy’, are also evident and Dear proves his songwriting mettle with the beautifully reflective acoustic guitar-led ‘Give Me More’. It’s a bold, ambitious statement from a techno producer keen to expand his range watch this space.

Deserter

Over a muted breakbeat, multi-layered reverse strings and FX and a simple keyboard loop, Dear pores his heart out in an endearingly juvenile ode to his better half. A strong chorus pull this one through. Four Tet strips the elements bare, before rebuilding into a thing of simpler beauty.
