Singer songwriter and head Athlete James Yorkston waxes lyrical to hotpress.com about his favourite toys
What's your guitar?
On tour I take two Lowden acoustic guitars. One nylon, one steel.
Where did you buy it?
John Henry’s in London.
What was your first instrument?
My brother’s mate Nevil gave me a Kay electric.
If you had an unlimited budget, what would you buy?
Guitar: Gretsch Country Gent. Another couple of Lowdens would be nice.
Who and what song did you play air guitar to as a kid?
'Raunchy' by Bill Justis

What instruments can you knock a tune out of (however bad it may be)?
On the album I play guitar, moothie, bass, concertina, Rhodes, clarinet, mandola, banjo etc
Did you ever get piano/any-other-instrument lessons when you were a kid?
Piano & violin. My violin teacher was very pretty, my piano teacher was very Russian.
What's the most rock n roll thing you've ever done to an instrument?
I threw my flat mate’s Rhodes out of our 3rd floor window. It landed on his car. I hated him.
What's your favourite Irish musical instrument shop and why?
That one in Skib where they sold me some banjo strings. Why? It saved me driving anywhere else and meant I could go to the beach.
What's your favourite place to record and why?
Somewhere where there’s no producer, phone or clock.
