She sadly lost out on the Best Actress gong to Emma Stone, but Irish thespian Ruth Negga stood out on the red carpet last night by making a subtle political statement with an American Civil Liberties Union ribbon proudly displayed on her elegant Valentino gown.
Speaking on the red carpet about the blue ACLU ribbon, Ruth told the world's press: "They're a very important organisation; they were part of our film. They helped Mildred Loving and Richard Loving change the Constitution of the United States for the better.
"They invalidated these ridiculous miscegenation laws and so I champion that. And I champion people fighting for justice and equal rights and I think they do that in the most amazing way for everybody."
The Limerick actress, who admitted that she had "thousands" of "butterflies" at the event, also spoke passionately about the Oscar-nominated movie 'Loving' that has propelled her into the Hollywood limelight. "I knew we were making something very moving because, you know, I'd studied this couple," said Ruth who was nominated for the Best Actress gong for her brilliant performance in 'Loving'.
"They were such a beautiful couple; you can't help but be captivated by them. They radiated beauty and goodness and I knew we were making something special.
"There was this energy on the set of goodness. I knew that it would move people, and that was the most important thing for us."
