Mary Robinson criticises Trump's Board of peace: "a delusion of power"
"[Trump]'s had the power of the United States of America unfettered within the country and outside the country. And we're seeing what that means," said Mary Robinson.
Former president of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson has described Trump's Board of Peace as "the board of the power of one person".
The Board of Peace is an organisation proposed by Trump in September 2025 and formally approved by the United Nations in January 2026. The Board, chaired by Trump, is supposed to help resolve a series of global conflicts, with countries such as China, India, Russia, Ukraine, Egypt, and Belarus invited to join.
During RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Robinson said the Board is Trump's "delusion of power". She said the Board of Peace does not mention Gaza like the original project, accepted by the UN, did. She also expressed the UN's Security Council were "bullied" into agreeing to it being set up.
"They agreed to a Board of Peace to implement the 20 stage phases of the peace plan of Gaza," she said. "There's no mention of Gaza, and there's no mention of a mandate from the UN in the Charter". "This Board of Peace has nothing to do with that. It's a much more general board as I said, of the power of one person".
She also said that Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement has led to other countries losing trust in his politics. Robinson talked about Trump's bullying, 100% tariffs threats and the cancelled invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to the Board. She called Trump "power obsessed".
On the events in Minnesota, Mary Robinson said that the Trump administration has used "a barrage of lies" to purposefully confuse people. She also noticed similarities between how fascism started in Germany, and the current political situation in the US.
"The elements are there, there's no doubt about it." she said. "We need to depend for the future of peace on our planet to make sure the rules-based system survives this power crazy man, which he is."
