Fontaines D.C.'s Deego: "Catherine Connolly is the candidate of the uncolonised Irish mind"
The Fontaines D.C. bassist joins the conversation ahead of Friday's election.
Fontaines D.C. bassist Conor 'Deego' Deegan III has taken to his Instagram Stories to issue support for Catherine Connolly ahead of the presidential election this Friday.
"Catherine Connolly is the candidate of the uncolonised Irish mind; Heather Humphreys is the candidate of the mind colonised by Britain," he wrote in a statement posted yesterday afternoon.
"Catherine Connolly is an exceptional candidate for President of Ireland, She represents not only the will of the Irish people on the geopolitical stage, but - she embodies the moral ambition of our Constitution as it was first imagined: a socialist republic."
The band has been very open in stating their political beliefs, previously stating the country could benefit from a socialist government and speaking out against parties such as Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael lyrically in one of their most popular songs 'I Love You'.
Deegan then goes on to criticise Connolly's opponent, Heather Humphreys.
"Heather Humphreys on the other hand, is not a candidate I would think much about were it not for her recent smear campaign against Connolly and her attempts to 'humanise' herself. This concept of 'humanisation' in politics is troubling in itself - topic for another day," he continued.
"But these strategies fall far below the standards of dignity and courtesy I've come to cherish in Irish political life, especially when compared to the moral free fall we've seen in the United States and Britain."
"Humphreys embodies the old FF/FG Anglo-Irish mentality: an Ireland reshaped in the image of Britishness, governed through the same modes of control and hierarchy," he concluded. "Catherine Connolly, meanwhile, is a Gaeilgeoir and a true representative of the Irish spirit. I have no doubt she would serve as a thoughtful, principled and inspiring President of Ireland."
Many of his contemporaries have also shown support for Connolly, with Irish acts such as the Mary Wallopers, Huartan, Madra Salach, SexyTadhg, Christy Moore, Shampain and Cable Boy performing at the Ceol For Connolly, Get Out To Vote fundraiser at Vicar Street last night.
