Congressman Jim McGovern endorses Elizabeth Warren and talks all things 2020
Jim McGovern, Democratic Congressman and Chairman of the House Committee on Rules, chats with Hot Press about his endorsement of Elizabeth Warren and the key issues facing his party ahead of the 2020 elections.
The next US election will prove to be the most consequential in recent memory, with the chance to remove Donald Trump from office. So, with a mere 13 months to go until the 2020 election, all eyes are turning Stateside in the hope that, just maybe, we'll be able to turn it all around.
In our latest issue, we sat down with Democratic Congressman Jim McGovern to discuss the upcoming election and its ramifications.
The Congressman declared his support for fellow Massachusetts politician, Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is running for president in 2020.
"She's smart," he says. "She gets it. She actually has a plan for dealing with the crisis at our border that's compassionate; it's consistent with our values."
Having recently visited El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, as well as the Mexican border, the Congressman says that a history of poor foreign policy in the region has served to perpetrate the border crisis.
And with an endless spate of mass shootings in the US, McGovern says the imperative for the Senate to pass gun control legislation is greater than ever.
"The fact that the Senate Majority Leader refuses to act – in my opinion – means he has blood on his hands. I don't know how he can look at himself in the mirror every morning," he exclaims. "I don't think I could live with myself if I didn't want to make sure that nobody else has to suffer through their pain in the future."
Luckily, he says, there's one faction of society that is poised to force these changes: youth. In his 25 years as a Congressman, he says the recent spike in youth activism is unprecedented and highly promising.
"A lot of young people are saying 'I don't want the status quo to be my future. I don't want this to be normalised. I want to make things better.'"
Whether or not the necessary changes will be made come 2020 is yet to be seen. But according to Congressman McGovern, we indeed have a path forward on many critical issues the US faces. Now it's up to voters to decide whether or not to take that path.
