We Were Exploding Anyway
Veteran post-rockers still have what it takes
At the start of the ’90s, post rock instrumentalists 65 Days Of Static were arguably the trail-blazers of a musical genre that has only just latterly gained respect and popularity. We Were Exploding Anyway is their fourth record and it’s possibly their best to date. Musically complex and outrageously ambitious, the Sheffield four-piece have broadened their sound somewhat and while they’re lost some of their post-rock edge, they’re gained some new tricks along the way that are sure to keep their fans on their toes.
Highlight of the record has to be the goth-punk tinged ‘Come To Me,’ which features an appearance from the Cure frontman Robert Smith and it’s an absolute masterpiece. Featuring looped vocals and some stellar guitar playing, it stands as both 65 Days Of Static’s greatest work to date and Smith’s best performance since the 90s. There are other treats on offer too. The techno-rock swagger of ‘Go Complex’ is jaw-droppingly good and album opener ‘Mountainhead’ is monstrous too. Just when the rest of the world was starting to catch on to their sound, it looks like the band have raised the bar once again.
