Under Streetlight Glow
Quirky Downbeat Singer-Songwriter Best In Small Doses
Heidi Spencer has a tunefully raspy, tremulous voice. It’s one of those lived-in voices that doesn’t have to plead for your attention. “What a fascinating home,” you think, “I wonder what lives in it.” It turns out that what lives in Heidi’s voice are some not hugely original musings about heartache and yearning, weather and drinking. Luckily the neighbours are a tuneful if roughly-hewn acoustic pickup band, propelled by piano and acoustic guitar and given expressive breadth by some lovely electric guitar and slide. But even this doesn’t cheer up Heidi’s voice, which although fascinating at first, does get to be a bit depressing after a while.
