Track of the Day: Seán Parnell - ‘Over Feeling Down’

Soulful folk singer-songwriter Seán Parnell emerges as a rising star in Cork’s vibrant music scene with the release of his debut single ‘Over Feeling Down,’ out today, October 12 via Faction Records.

The single was produced by the magic touch of Brien, known for his work with Kojaque and Kean Kavanaugh, and recorded in London and Cork. Parnell pins his debut release as, “A song about the smoke clearing after a hard time when I was broke and eating a lot of beans.”

A melting pot of soul and folk influences, ‘Over Feeling Down’ characterises itself as a deeply felt song that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The introspective track maintains pop sensibilities, complemented by alternative R&B-inspired production. Parnell’s vocals are captivatingly raw, carrying a warm, raspy tone through the track’s highs and fervent lows.

Simple acoustic guitar introduces the emotional baseline of the song, before the chorus expands into groovy, soulful territory complimented by a soothing electric guitar riff. Swinging between honeyed singing and wry sing-speak, Parnell uses lyrical metaphors to make a joke out of tough times, sardonically expressing, “I wake up and spill the beans, then I eat the beans, then I lick the tin for a cup a change I wish I had.”

But the real confession comes with the chorus, as Parnell sings, “To tell you the truth, I’m over feeling down, but I can’t see past myself, it’s only up to me now.” With a distinctive sound and a narrative that easily resonates with audiences, ‘Over Feeling Down’ is the first gleaming glimpse into the rising Cork musician’s craft.

Seán Parnell will debut his single on Wednesday, October 18 at Cypress Avenue for the Music Cork 2023 showcase, alongside local rising acts The Cliffords, Jaed, and Brad Heidi.
