Track of the Day: Pebbledash, ‘Killer Love’
The first of two songs released as a double single, ‘Killer Love’ is a hypnotising, shoegazey effort from the Cork outfit.
Pre-empting the release of the Pebbledash’s debut EP, set for release at the end of 2024, ‘Killer Lover’ is an otherworldly, yet gloriously noisy first release of the year for the Cork band.
With an instrumentation of ethereal, repetitive guitar riffs and vocal lines, complete with a dreamy blend of melodious harmonies, the track is a bittersweet homage to Cork City, as exemplified by its cacophonous climax and its lines “I don’t want you / I want you to want me.”
Speaking of the track, singer and guitarist Fionnbharr Hickey says: “‘Killer Lover' sprouted from conflicting notions of loving and hating a place and time simultaneously,” a gut-wrenching sentiment that is beautifully accompanied by the song’s final crunchy string lines and raucous musical ensemble.
Pebbledash recorded this track in the historic Crowleys Music Centre in Cork City, along with Andy Killian from Pretty Happy. The band had to adapt to the tight space, making use of the eclectic arrangement of instruments hanging on the surrounding walls.
With ‘Killer Love’, Pebbledash has also put out the single ‘Carraig Aonair’, their take on traditional séan nós music, with a dash of experimental noise.
