Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan cover album to feature Bruce Springsteen, Ramones, and more
The songwriting of the legendary American singer-songwriter and his longtime collaborator and wife will be honoured with 19 covers on Where The Willow And The Dogwood Grow.
A compilation of Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan covers is set for release on Friday, May 29 via Ace Records.
Titled Where The Willow And The Dogwood Grow, the album will feature 19 reinterpretations of Waits and Brennan's songs from the likes of the Ramones, Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams, and Joan Baez, among others. Waits and Brennan personally selected many of the album features.
The Cork-born Brennan has long been credited as Waits' producer and co-writer. The two married in 1980 before formally beginning their creative partnership with Waits' 1983 album Swordfishtrombones.
Waits has stated it was Brennan who first helped him expand beyond genre and try out experimental sounds.
The title Where The Willow And The Dogwood Grow is drawn from 'Down There By The Train', sung by Johnny Cash midway through the album.
This is not the first Waits tribute album to spotlight big names in music. 2019's Come On Up To The House: Women Sing Waits boasted features from Roseanne Cash, Phoebe Bridgers, Aimee Mann, and Corinne Bailey Rae.
The album is tracklisted chronologically by song. It's available for preorder now.
