The Soul Of Science
Ian O'Brien and Kirk DeGiorgio compile an album's worth of rare jazz, funk and disco music.
Ian O'Brien and Kirk DeGiorgio compile an album's worth of rare jazz, funk and disco music. It's interesting to listen to newer electronic music alongside the material that originally inspired it, intricate, visionary music that hasn't aged; for instance, the pleasant rainy day jazz of O'Brien's own 'Eden' and the authentic, psychedelic disco re-creation of David Axelrod's 'Mucho Chupar' are followed by the heart breaking 'Love Beams' by Lonnie Liston and Dunn Pearson Jnr.'s 'Groove On Down', an original disco track with sensuous strings and an understated yet polished production. Unfortunately most of the newer contributions on Science aren't as strong as the past masters, with only the soulful and cinematic break beat brilliance of Be Bop Dawg's 'Les Enfants' reaching the same heights.
