The Charlatans announce new album We Are Love and share title track
Listen to the album's title track below.
Eight years on from their last album, 2017's Different Days, The Charlatans have announced that their long awaited 14th studio LP, We Are Love, is set to be released on October 31, via BMG. To coincide with the news, the Manchester band have shared the album's title track, which they recently debuted live at a hometown show.
We Are Love promises to kick off "a bold new era" for the band – "one that finds them at peace with their past whilst looking forward to a bright future."
Frontman Tim Burgess describes the lead single as "an open top car ride in the credits of your favourite movie driving along the coast to somewhere amazing."
"Early on we thought it felt right," The Charlatans' Mark Collins says of the track's creation. "And it turned out that way: first single, title track, second song on the album. And things started forming around 'We Are Love'. There was a certain energy to it that drove us forwards.”
We Are Love will be The Charlatans' first album in eight years – the longest gap between albums in the band's entire discography, which they attribute to Covid, solo projects, "life's complexities", and the fact that the band members are scattered across Europe.
Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange), Spector's Fred Macpherson, and the legendary Stephen Street are all credited as producers on the album, which was recorded at Rockfield in Wales and The Charlatans' Big Mushroom space in Middlewich, Cheshire.
It was the band's first time at Rockfield since the death of their keyboard player Rob Collins in a car crash at the famous farm studio, during the recording of's 1997's Tellin' Stories.
“The whole idea of hauntology and psychogeography is represented by us going back to Rockfield, where so much history has happened for The Charlatans," Tim Burgess reflects. "That was important as a way of honouring every member who's played in the band. So we’re honouring ourselves, our past, feeling that energy and reincarnating it, doing something fresh, brand new.”
The Charlatans have also announced a string of December UK tour dates – listed in full here.
