Songs For The Ravens
Okay, Julie Anne Baenziger of Sea of Bees, you spell fire with a ‘y’ (‘Fyre’) and you have a song called ‘Gnomes’, but how are you with spreadsheets, unclogging a drain or parsing an insurance claim? Yeah, I didn’t think so. Another kooky songstress asks a question that’s on all of our lips: is there space in the world for another kooky songstress? The answer, surprisingly, is yes. Falling somewhere between the folky oddness of Kate Bush (tracks like ‘Willis’), the indie classicness of Tania Donnelly (on ‘Marmalade’), and saying her s’s in a manner very similar to Cathy Davey, Baenziger’s debut is nonetheless a very enjoyable romp filled with airy vocals, inventively eclectic arrangements and a hopeful heart.
