Phil Collins reveals he is under 24-hour care after multiple health issues
The Grammy-wining solo artist and former frontman of Genesis revealed a number of recent health issues
Phil Collins has revealed that he is under 24-hour care after years of complications from a 2007 injury and additional health issues.
The 2007 injury, a dislocated vertebrae in Collins’ upper neck as a result of years of poor drumming posture, has been an recurring issue for Collins. In 2022, the injury rendered the Grammy-winning artist unable to play the drums on tour with his band, Genesis (his son, Nic, played the drums on that tour).
Further complications and additional problems have seen the musician’s health deteriorate further.
“You know I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should do,” said Collins in an interview with the BBC’s Zoe Ball. “I’ve had challenges with my knee. I had everything that could go wrong with me did go wrong with me. I got COVID in hospital — my kidneys started to back up, you know, everything…all seemed to converge at the same time.”
The singer also revealed that he has been two years sober, suggesting that some of the problems with his kidney may have been a result of “drinking too much.”
Despite his health issues, Collins said he hopes to work on more music in the future.
“I couldn’t have wished for a more varied and eventful playing career,” said Collins. “The things that are ahead for me would be, apart from just being back to being totally mobile and healthy, is go in there and have a fiddle about and see if there’s more music…I’ve got some things that are half formed or were never finished, and a couple of things that were finished, which I like, so you know, maybe life in the old dog.”
