Ninja Tuna
Between the sounds of the jazz funk piano and a little bit of soul, plain and simple- Mr Scruff make a good album.
This album is just very good. Some highlights –
‘Music Takes Me Up’ is a euphorically amazing soul song with a propelling piano track, organ stabs and a bloody fine vocal performance from Alice Russell as she sings about the music she’s singing on.
‘Donkey Ride’ is a rollicking and rackety jazz funk piano track with shouts of ‘Come on! Come on!’ and toot toot backing vocals.
‘Whiplash’ has a great Muppety keyboard sound with staccato brass flourishes.
‘Nice Up The Function’ features Roots Manuva in absolutely fine fettering form, again rapping about the music he’s singing on.
And the whole record is damn good. The cover features a cartoon of a tuna drawn by Mr Scruff himself. The tuna is smiling – and so am I.
