New music night to launch in Ballyshannon this week – featuring Chanele McGuinness, Aongus and Caoimhín Mac Aoidh

A new music night, Let Me Sing Of What I Know, is set to launch at Old Barracks Studios in Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, this Friday, August 21 – with performances from Irish artists Chanele McGuinness, Aongus and Caoimhín Mac Aoidh.

Organiser Dominic Angelella describes it as "the first of what I hope to be a quarterly event... showcasing some of the wonderful musicians I know, performing in fun and possibly unorthodox ways."

Raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and now based in Ballyshannon, Dominic is an award-winning songwriter, who was recognised at this year's ASCAP Pop Music Awards for his work on Ravyn Lenae's viral hit 'Love Me Not'. In addition to his work as a solo artist, he also plays bass for Lucy Dacus.

Dominic also has credits on 'Prove Me Wrong', the latest single from acclaimed Donegal singer-songwriter Chanele McGuinness, who is set to perform on the night. The track – which follows last year's 'You're A Liar' – is expected to feature on her new LP, coming soon.

Aongus – a cellist, singer and multi-instrumentalist who hails from Donegal, and is now based in Dublin – will also be sharing new music, influenced by the likes of Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Arthur Russell and Sigur Rós. He released his latest track 'Shudder', in November.

Donegal's fiddle tradition, meanwhile, will be explored by renowned musician and collector Caoimhín Mac Aoidh – a founding member of Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí.

"I talked to him on the phone last night and he said he’d be playing some tunes ‘that haven’t been heard in a long time,'" Dominic said of Caoimhín. "I’m sure I’ll be playing with him as well..."

Let Me Sing Of What I Know takes its name from a poem by William Allingham – a famed 19th-century poet born and raised in Ballyshannon.

Admission to the event – which kicks off at 7pm – is free.
