Detroit artists have released too many self-indulgent jazz projects and god-fearing gospel house albums in recent years, so it makes a pleasant change to hear a proper, full-blooded Motor City techno album again. There are some references to his ancestors’ suffering and 3000’s struggle to get to where he is nowadays. However, look beyond these clichés, and you will find some very good dancefloor techno. The strength of 3000’s work lies in his ability to fuse dramatic strings and lush chords with organic, tribal rhythms, and his willingness to use funk, acid and Middle Eastern samples means he’s not just repeating a limited set of ideas.
