King Tuff
Regal rocker releases sugary new record
As a luminary of the lo-fi scene, much has been made of King Tuff’s love of all things rock and indeed roll. In truth, that is not the most striking thing about this self-titled album. Rather, the Sub Pop debut by a man who previously earned his corn with stoner types Witch is – in parts at least – as catchy as an STD in the Big Brother house. All 12 tracks call to mind a rousing mix of Marc Bolan, Teenage Fanclub and Wavves, with the hip-shakin’ ‘Loser’s Wall’ and the pop-tastic ‘Alone & Stoned’ ranking among the highlights. In short, King Tuff’s latest effort is a timely reminder that sometimes less is more.
