Kate Winslet calls gender wage gap conversations “vulgar”
Oscar-winning star believes matter is not for public discussion
It seems not all actresses are eager to discuss Hollywood’s controversial gender wage gap, including Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet.
Jennifer Lawrence’s open latter about discovering she was getting paid much less than her male co-stars sparked passionate responses from many in the film industry, including Lawrence’s oft-co-star Bradley Cooper, who committed to speaking openly about his wages to ensure his female co-stars were being paid equally. Helen Mirren also recently praised Lawrence’s highlighting of the issue, saying that women have been socially conditioned not to demand what they are worth. “I thought it was fabulous. I loved it, it was very personal and she’s right. We are too polite as women.”
However, one actress who was surprisingly fine with women being more polite and paid less was Kate Winslet. The actress, who is known for speaking out about female empowerment and the unrealistic expectations of beauty and thinness promoted by Hollywood, shocked fans by saying she found the recent conversations about the gender wage gap in Hollywood “vulgar.”
Speaking to Newsbeat, Winslet expressed her discomfort with the wage gap conversation and chalked it up to cultural differences, saying “I’m having such a problem with these conversations. I understand why they are coming up but maybe it’s a British thing. I don’t like talking about money; it’s a bit vulgar isn’t it?”
“I don’t think that’s a very nice conversation to have publicly at all. I’m quite surprised by these conversations to be honest, simply because it seems quite a strange thing to be discussing out in the open like that.”
“Honestly, no. And if I’d ever been in that situation I would have either dealt with it or removed myself from it. I find all this quite uncomfortable. I haven’t ever felt that I’ve really had to stick up for myself just because I’m a woman.”
