Lilla Vargen (whose name means 'little wolf'), speaks to us about participating in the Irish Women in Harmony single for Safe Ireland.
Lilla Vargen is on the verge of becoming Ireland's next most exciting export. In January, she was touring with Dermot Kennedy and bringing her soulful, larger-than-life voice to audiences across the globe.
Speaking to Hot Press about being involved in the Irish Women in Harmony single, the young singer-songwriter is ever humble. "There are so many women creating fantastic music in Ireland right now, and to bring them all together for such a worthwhile cause was a no brainer," she says. "My first thought when I was asked to sing on 'Dreams' was a massive 'YES.'
"I hope this inspires more women to see that they can be heard and deserve to be listened to as musicians and creatives, and I hope this release will raise some much needed funds for Safe Ireland."
Much like other the other women involved in the single, a big part of the draw was getting to sing Dolores O'Riordan's incredible song, and pay respects to her through music. "She was an incredible songwriter and a powerhouse front woman," Vargen says. "I have looked up to her for many years for creating an undeniably unique sound and for unapologetically making music that she wanted to make. Dolores made me feel like a career in music was possible and that being honest in my songwriting is vitally important."
The other vital importance is, of course, Safe Ireland. "This subject is close to my heart, and in lockdown the figures of domestic abuse have risen," Vargen notes. "We need to do whatever we can to help those in these horrific and vulnerable situations. We need to be there for each other. These women and children need support and security in their lives. Safe Ireland has helped thousands of women and children who have been victims of domestic abuse and with your and my help will be able to help many more."
