Q: Jim Brady from Wicklow Town wants to know how his band can get a manager.
A: First of all, Jim , before looking for a manager you should spend as long as you can learning about the basics of the business yourself. In the early days, bands are able to do much of the work themselves. Having dealt with the process directly, when the time comes for management you’ll have a better idea of what the role entails.
So why not look at this in reverse way, and ask yourself what you and your band can do in order to become a more attractive proposition to prospective managers i.e. have them come looking for you rather than you looking for them. Any progress in areas such as building up a following, releasing your own records, even setting up your own record label or publishing company will make you more appealing. It is also a good signal to potential management of your dedication and willingness to work hard.

When the time comes, don’t be afraid to check out a prospective manager’s track record (many will say things or drop names to impress you). Just because they are well known doesn’t mean they have been successful with every act that they have managed. Make informed decisions when employing a manager, not ones from the heart. As always, they can come back to haunt you.
