HOT FLAVOURS: We'll Always Have Paris!
Baked Argentinian treats, South Indian pancakes, Peruvian ceviche, Japanese cedarwood matured whiskey & Frosties French Toast are all on this month’s menu!
Those of a sweet-toothed disposition will get down on their knees and thank god for Bakeology, Dublin’s first Argentinian bakery which is up the road from Vicar St. at 43 Meath Street.
Open Monday through Saturday, the goodies include facturas, a sort of Latino Danish pastry filled with custard, quince paste or dulce de leche; sweet puff pastry libritos; and tortitas negras, teardrop shaped cakes with a generous coating of crunchy dark brown sugar. https://www.instagram.com/bakeology.treats.
South Indian food truckers Dosa Dosa have taken up permanent Thursday through Sunday residence at Albert Court East, Grand Central Street Lower, Dublin 2.
Along with their trademark rice and lentil dosa pancakes – the Chettinad Chicken one is especially yum – they do do parotta flatbreads and a rotating selection of sides that will have you purring with delight.
They get extra marks for being dead sound and explaining to the world’s pickiest eater – no names, but “Hi, Susan!” – precisely what’s being dished up. https://www.facebook.com/DosaDosaDublin.
More surprising than Paris Hilton having her own Netflix food show is the fact that it’s hugely entertaining. Resplendent in a ‘That’s Hot’ apron, the hotel heiress gets celebrity pals like Kim Kardashian, Demi Lovato and Nikki Glasser to help her rustle up Frosties French Toast, Shrimp Tacos & Salsa and Vegan Burgers on Cooking With Paris, which is available to binge on now.
Having been all the rage these past few years in Dublin, Peruvian-style dining has finally come to Dublin courtesy of Zampas in Dublin’s Hard Rock Hotel a dozen or so doors up from the Olympia on Dame Street.
Presided over by Head Chef Stuart Heeney who makes sure that fresh Irish produce is also to the fore, the likes of Wild Locally Landed White Fish Ceviche; Asador Roasted Peruvian Chicken; Honey & Soy Glazed Aubergine; and Papa Rellena, AKA Beef Cheek & Potato Croquettes with Salsa Criolla & Serrano Chilli Cream, all comprehensively hit the Latin American spot. As does the Pisco Sour with citrus, bitters, sugar and egg whites, which tops a very fine cocktail menu. https://www.zampas.ie.
Roe & Co. are justifiably proud of their latest 46% Japanese Sugi Whiskey release, which uniquely has lightly toasted Japanese cedarwood bungs inserted into the barrels during the finishing process.
The result is a top quality drop with notes of tea, lychee, pineapple mint, spiced orchard fruits, vanilla and treacle toffee. It’s €80 a bottle but worth every cent. https://shop.roeandcowhiskey.com/products/roe-co-japanese-sugi.
The nearby Savour Kilkenny may have been postponed until next year but the Waterford Harvest Festival is go from September 6-12 with Déise dishes, blaas and beers galore across the city.
One of the must-visits on John’s Bridge overlooking the Suir is Grady’s Yard, home to both a quaffalicious Yellowbelly taproom – ours is a Kellerbier Unfiltered Helles Lager, please – and the artisan Phat Cow burger joint whose Sweet Bejaysus beef patty comes with a generous slathering of Cashel Blue and the sweetest fried onions you’ve ever tasted.
We also like the look of the September 10 hooley local applemeisters Viking Craft Cider are throwing in the Fat Angel Wine Bar. https://www.waterfordharvestfestival.ie.
