The alt-pop banger is the second single from Fia Moon’s upcoming six-song mixtape.
Dublin alt-pop singer Fia Moon has released a self-affirming new single, titled ‘XX’.
The track, which celebrates the power that can come from heartbreak, is the second single off Fia Moon’s upcoming six-song mixtape.
Produced by Marcia Sondeijker and Tannergard, ‘XX’ has an explosive, radio-ready chorus and atmospheric verses cloaked in synths.
In its alternative take on pop production, it evokes FKA Twigs and Rina Sawayama as well as Fia Moon’s R&B influences.
Moon said that “the song is about that ex you can’t stop thinking about.” But the song is also about empowerment, because for Moon, heartbreak cuts both ways.
In a tender falsetto, she sings about the power she holds over her ex, who misses her as much as she misses him: “I know you still want me / loving all my body.”
Moon contrasted the track to another recent single, ‘Better Days’. “While 'better days' is vulnerable,” she said, “'XX' is the follow up where the tables begin to turn as you know the other person needs you too."
The song’s title came from a joking discussion about exes between Moon and her producers: “We started talking about how I was feeling being newly single and about my most recent ex but also about my first boyfriend.
“We were laughing because they were getting confused between the two, so we would call one ‘x’ and the other ‘xx’, which is where the title came from,” she said.
The single is the latest in a string of successes for the UCD grad. ‘Better Days’ has earned extensive radio play and spots on six Spotify editorial playlists, including ‘New Music Friday UK’ and ‘Breath of Fresh Eire’.
Moon also participated in the ‘Irish Women in Harmony’ cover of ‘Dreams’ by The Cranberries. Singing alongside 39 other female Irish artists, Moon helped raise funds for Safe Ireland.
‘XX’ is out on all major streaming services today, and its lyric video is set to hit the Dynmk Youtube channel on July 28. Listen to Fia Moon’s latest single on Spotify below.
