Fefe Dobson is coming for Avril Lavigne, it seems. She is also Canadian, has the name that no one is sure how to pronounce, lots of backing guitars and lines like: “Tell me whom should I be to make you love me/Tell me what does it mean to be alone” like any angry teen girl pop rocker should. Even “Daddy, daddy/Why do you break your promises to me?” makes an appearance, so maybe she’s after Christina too.
The main problem with 19-year-old Fefe, apart from the fact that even her name makes her sound like a harmless poodle, is that her music is empty and only barely prevents boredom. I didn’t clock one genuine emotion from her voice, which itself isn’t up to scratch. Even for the adolescent punk chick market she has little to offer.
‘Revolution Song’ nearly gets it right and ‘8X10’ is another track that’s bearable. And the opening ‘Stupid Little Love Song’ tries a bit too hard to rock out but is actually good fun.
Fefe did write all the lyrics and music herself, with some help from her producer. And yet I am unmoved. This is one little puppy to take out on a drive to the country and dump.
