Bonnie Tyler dies aged 75
The ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ singer died in hospital in Portugal following an illness.
Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, best known for hits including ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ and ‘Holding Out For A Hero’, has died at the age of 75.
A statement on Tyler's official website reads: “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.”
Her death comes just weeks after it was announced that she had come out of a coma but remained “very unwell” in intensive care. Tyler had been rushed to hospital in Portugal in May for emergency intestinal surgery, and was placed in an induced coma to aid her recovery.
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler rose to fame in the late 1970s with ‘It’s A Heartache’ before reaching international success in the 1980s with ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’. She later scored another major hit with ‘Holding Out For A Hero’, which featured on the soundtrack to Footloose.
Tyler was nominated for three Grammy Awards over the course of her career, and in 2013, she represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song ‘Believe In Me’.
In recent years, she marked the 40th anniversary of ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ with a European tour and had also featured on a 2025 collaboration with David Guetta and Hypaton.
