On her latest album Atlas continues the blend of ancient and modern, of east and west, that were the essential ingredients of her previous albums – the excellent Diaspora, as well as Halim and Gedida. Recorded in studios in Cairo.

So far, other than as a sampled vocal or musical texture, this music has made little impact outside of a small number of fans on these shores. Which is a pity as there is much to be found in the rich, rhythmic and vocal tapestry. The traditional, French language ‘Soleil D’Egypte’, produced with Transglobal Underground is one of the most powerful tracks on the album and continues the link with the London-based production posse, with whom she has worked since before her solo work. It is one of five tracks that they work on together here. This mix of producers never affects the overall mood of the album as it is so strongly rooted in Atlas’ particular vision and vocal delivery.
Natasha Atlas has created her music from many diverse strands for a diaspora that understand its strength and its worth.
